The road to a Swedish driving licence can be divided into different steps. Here you can read about what the different steps include.

Apply for a learner's permit

You need a valid learner’s permit to practise driving and take the driving licence test. This applies if you are obtaining your first driving licence or if you already have a licence but want to add a new licence category.

Applications for learner’s permit are made through the Swedish Transport Agency.

Introductory course

If you intend to practice driving privately, you will need to attend an introductory course with the person who is going to teach you before you begin the driving practice. The driver’s training must be led by a certified administrator.

Your instructor needs to attend an introductory course before the Swedish Transport Agency can process your application. The person looking to obtain their licence also needs to complete the introductory course. You need to take the same course, though not necessarily at the same time.

The introductory course will contain information about:

the goals and contents of the driving licence training
the rules that apply during driving practise
how to plan and structure the driving practise
traffic safety and the surrounding environment

The course takes at least three hours to complete. The instructor receives information about their role and their responsibility during driving practise. Discussions are also held regarding how the instructor and the student might interpret the same traffic situation differently.

Driver training starts

Once you have completed your introductory course and your instructor has received a valid permit, you can start your training, both by practising driving and by studying theory. You can drive with your private instructor or at a driving school.

Do not forget to study theory in tandem with your growing driving skills.

Knowledge is an important foundation for becoming a good and safe driver. In order to pass both tests, you will need to become knowledgeable with both theory and actual driving.

Book risk training

When you approach the end of your training, it might be time to book your risk training.

You must have completed the risk training before you can take the theory test and the practical driving test. It is valid until the day you obtain your driving licence, or for a maximum of five years. If you are attending a driving school, the school will enrol you in the risk training. If you are training with a private instructor, you need to find a certified instructor by yourself.

Book the theory test and the practical driving test

When you feel that you have mastered the required theoretical and driving skills, you are ready to book a test appointment.

Make sure to book well in advance, but you need to have completed the necessary training courses before you take the tests. Test appointments are made available 11 months in advance.

Take risk training courses 1 and 2

At the end of your training, you will need to take the risk training courses. The training consists of two parts:

Part 1 concerns alcohol and drugs, becoming tired when driving, and other risky behaviours.
Part 2 concerns speed, driving safety, and driving on different types of roads and during various types of weather conditions. You will also drive on a skidpad.

Remember that you have to pass the theory test before you can take the driving test.
