What does the Double-Track Ängelholm-Maria project involve?

The Double-Track Ängelholm-Maria project will upgrade a 24-kilometre-long section of existing single track to double track between Ängelholm and Maria. The section in question is part of the West Coast Line.

Upgrading to double track will increase capacity for train traffic and so reduce vulnerability in the railway system. Furthermore, the upgrade increases accessibility in the region with more modern stations at Kattarp, Ödåkra and Maria.

Why is the double track needed?

The West Coast Line runs between Gothenburg and Malmö/Lund and is an important connection for passenger and freight traffic in southwest Sweden. The line is important both for regional commuting and for longer journeys between the Öresund region and Gothenburg/Norway. The majority of the West Coast Line has already been upgraded to double track, which leaves the section through Varberg and the Ängelholm-Helsingborg section.

Today, utilisation of capacity on the existing single track between Ängelholm and Helsingborg is high, meaning that train traffic is unable to develop at a pace that satisfies demand. Upgrading to double tracks provides increased capacity and reduces the risk of delays.

When will the double track be open to traffic?

We expect the total construction time for upgrading to double track to be four years. Construction work is expected to begin in 2020 and be completed in 2023.

What will the double track cost?

The project is estimated to cost SEK 2.4 billion as per the 01-2016 price level. Factors that can affect the project cost include the market situation, uncertainties during implementation, and decisions and permissions from public authorities.

How is the double track being financed?

The Ängelholm-Helsingborg section is part of the West Coast Line, which is of considerable national importance. Therefore, it is in the national interest to remove the bottleneck created by the single track, which is why the project is being financed with public funds. City of Helsingborg and Region Skåne are helping to co-finance the project.

Will the new double track be used by freight trains?

Freight traffic will mainly use the freight line through Skåne, i.e. Hallandsås-Ängelholm-Åstorp. Freight traffic will only use the West Coast Line and the Ängelholm-Kattarp section during occasional diversions.

How will accessibility at intersecting roads be affected?

The new double track between Ängelholm and Helsingborg will affect some existing roads. Some intersecting roads will be closed and some relocation of roads and railway crossings will be necessary. All crossings will be grade-separated.

Swedish Transport Administration is working to ensure that roads continue to fulfil their function after the construction work and that the standard of roads affected by the work remains high.
