This is how ERTMS works

The new signalling system differs from the old national ATC system in several aspects. We will in this chapter explain some of the differences. This site also includes information about the ERTMS’ technical side.

ERTMS means a technical shift on the Swedish railway. It means leaving behind an old system and shifting into a standardised and digitalised era. Old signalling installations are already approaching the end of their technical life span and spare parts are out of stock.

Once the shift to the new signalling system has taken place, optical signals will be replaced by in cab-signalling. The driver will receive information directly on a display inside the engine.

Sweden’s strategy is level 2

Sweden has chosen level 2 as its strategy for all lines. Level 2 allows more functions and is a more flexible system compared to level 1. The Swedish Traffic Administration “Trafikverket” has decided not to pursue with the level 3 option. Level 3 is only installed on the Västerdalsbanan for trial purposes. Level 3 does no longer include track circuits.
