ERTMS – European Rail Traffic Management System
The railway's safety and signalling system, developed between the 1950s and 1980s, needs to be replaced as it is outdated, run-down, and causes delays. A new system needs to be installed in the 2040s to ensure the railway infrastructure to be reliable.
With the new signalling system more trains will arrive on time. The railway infrastructure will be easier to monitor and maintain. A digital system also lays the foundation for future innovations. In the long term, cross border traffic will run smoother.
The new signalling system is based on the European Rail Traffic Management System, ERTMS, which is a common European standard for train protection systems.
