Hässleholm-Lund, two new tracks

Train traffic is increasingly quickly. Especially in Skåne. There is extensive need for increased capacity in the railway system. This applies to both passenger and freight traffic.

The background to the project is that in October of 2023 the Government commissioned the Swedish Transport Administration to start planning for the construction of two new railway tracks between Hässleholm and Lund. The expansion aims to improve commutes and contribute to increased rail-freight capacity. The new tracks will be designed for speeds up to 250 km/h, which new railways in Sweden are usually built for.

The starting points from the Government regarding the further planning of the project are that:

  • Its impact on the commencement of rail service must be as small as possible relative to previous planning on the Hässleholm-Lund section, when the project was conceived as part of the New Main Lines system. At that time, commencement of rail service was planned for approximately 2040.
  • The measure must be more socio-economically profitable in relation to previous planning on the Hässleholm-Lund section, when the project was intended as part of the New Main Lines.
  • Disruption to existing traffic during implementation must be minimised.

Several measures to improve capacity

Several measures, all of which contribute to improving the capacity of the railway network in Skåne, are to be accommodated within the same cost framework as Hässleholm-Lund, two new tracks:

  1. New level crossing at Malmö railway yard
  2. More platform tracks at Malmö Central Station, Övre
  3. Extension to double track between Östervärn Station and Malmö Central Station
  4. Passing loop at Slätthult on the Southern Main Line
  5. Passing loop at Rättelöv and track 21 in Hässleholm on the Southern Main Line
  6. Siding track on the freight route through Skåne

The cost framework for all the above measures is SEK 28 billion at 2021 price levels.

During the planning process, consultations are held with impacted individual stakeholders, municipalities, public authorities and other organisations. The Swedish Transport Administration will hold a dialogue with those affected and will take feasibility into account based on regional and local viewpoints.
