Welcome to Sweden – drive safely this winter

Everyone on the road affects traffic safety. By driving carefully, we can all help keep our roads safe and easy to travel. This is especially important in winter, when conditions can change quickly.

Recommendations for safe driving in winter

Check the weather before you travel

  • The winter weather in Sweden can be very different in each region, and snow or ice can come suddenly.
  • On long trips, you may meet many types of weather.
  • Check the forecasts from SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) and look at road weather maps before and during your trip.

Make sure you and your car are prepared

  • Always use winter tires  that follow the law.
  • Plan your trip carefully because weather and road conditions can change during the day.
  • Bring warm clothes, food and water in case the trip takes longer than you think.

Drive at a safe speed

  • Snow, ice, and cold mean that driving will take longer.
  • Keep a long distance from the car in front of you.
  • Your driving style is important for your own safety and for others on the road.

Do not pass snowplows driving side by side

  • Sometimes two snowplows drive together to clear the road.
  • One of the plows may move into your lane and be hard to see because of the snow.
  • Do not pass them. Always wait until the road is clear.
