Bridge in Stockholm by night

The renovation of the railway through central Stockholm, the so-called Getingmidjan

A large part of the railway through central Stockholm was built in the 1950s. Now it needs to be renovated to ensure the long-term reliability, quality and capacity of one of Sweden's most trafficked and utilised stretches.

The Swedish Transport - Scheduled shutdown: 22 June – 17 August.

Travelling instruction during the shutdown

No trains will be able to traffic the stretch between Stockholm Central and Stockholms Södra. This means trains will depart from and arrive at Stockholm Södra or Flemingsberg station. Passengers wishing to travel to or from Stockholm City centre can take the commuter train operated by SL. The trains depart from Stockholm City station situated below Stockholm Central Statin. Please follow yellow signs or ask the hosts for advice at the station.

Flemingsberg Train Station

Arriving at Flemmingsberg train station by regional train you will have to change to commuter train operated by SL to continue your trip to Stockholm or if you are continuing north by train. If you are travelling south from Stockholm you will depart from Stockholm City and change trains at Flemingsberg.

Stockholms Södra Train Station

If you are travelling by long-distance train to Stockholm or if you are continuing north by train you will have to change trains at Stockholms Södra.  These trains are operated by SL.  If you are travelling south from Stockholm you will depart from Stockholm City.

Add an extra 30-40 minutes travelling time to reach Stockholm from Flemingsberg Train Station or Stockholms Södra. If you have any questions about your ticket please contact the train company you are travelling with. Please follow yellow signs or ask the hosts for advice at the station.

About the project

Although this section of the railroad is only 2 km long, it is passed by almost every train to and from southern Sweden – on average one train every three minutes. A blockage on this section of railroad has major consequences for rail traffic throughout Sweden.

The project includes:

  • New bridge superstructures, including the repair and reinforcement of the bridge supports on the Norrström, Söderström and Söder Mälarstrand central railway bridges and footbridges across the Norrström and Söderström
  • The repair of the bridge across Tegelbacken and the bridge south of Söder Mälarstrand
  • The repair and reinforcement of the two tunnels, Riddarholmstunneln and Södertunneln
  • The repair and reinforcement of the access ramp south of the Riddarholmstunneln
  • The repair of the trough north and south of the Riddarholmstunneln
  • A new railway installation, BEST (Track, Electrical, Signalling and Telecommunication)

Following refurbishment Getingmidjan will have the same location and the same number of tracks as it has today

It is not possible to carry out construction without affecting the rail traffic. An important part of the planning therefore involves how to manage the rail traffic during the construction period. During certain periods it will be necessary to close the stretch Stockholm Central Station – Stockholm South, meaning the trains from Göteborg and Malmö will have to turn around at other stations or be diverted.

But the traffic is not the only important aspect of the planning. The railway passes through Riddarholmen, which is home to several historical buildings that are both sensitive and valuable. The planning therefore places a great focus on how to carry out the renovation while keeping these valuable assets protected.

When we renovate the railroad, it's an opportunity to improve the environment

The railroad as we know it today was largely built in the 1950s. Then dominated functionality at the expense of aesthetics. The environment is strongly characterized by the infrastructure, not only by the railroad, but also by the Central Bridge and the subway. Now that we are renovating the railroad, it gives us the opportunity to improve the vicinity of the railroad. The architecture and design is therefore an important part of the project.

Therefore, the project also includes renovating and improving the area closest to the railway, making it more enjoyable for pedestrians and cyclists. For example, we build noise protection to dampen the sound of the railroad.
